The Eucharistic Prayers remind us that every Mass is intended for all of us and for our loved ones, as we are all part of the Communion of Saints. Offering specific Mass intentions for those we love has been a beautiful and meaningful part of our Catholic tradition for centuries. We receive many requests at SJA to schedule a specific Mass intention. We try to honor these to the best of our ability and in accordance with the Code of Canon Law for the Universal Catholic Church.

We open our Mass Intention calendar each November to accept intention requests through December 31 of the following year. We honor intention requests on a first-come, first-served basis, as received in the SJA office. You may request specific Mass dates, times, and/or locations. If someone has already requested that Mass, we will assign your intention to the closest available Mass or according to your preference. We accept intentions for each year until all have been booked.

The following policies allow as many parishioners as possible to schedule intentions for their loved ones.

• Each household or group is allowed one (1) intention scheduled per month with a maximum of four (4) scheduled per calendar year, which includes two weekends (Saturday or Sunday) and two weekdays (Monday through Friday) Masses.
• A $10 stipend is suggested per Mass intention, as determined by Archdiocesan policy. A Mass offering may be more than the suggested stipend. Checks may be written to: SJA Memo: Mass Intention. If you drop a check in the mail or collection basket, please include a note indicating your intention requests.
• One Mass each weekend must be designated for the intentions of our parishioners known as “Pro Populo” (for the people), as required by Canon Lawn and diocesan statute.
• Maximum of 10 Masses per any one intention per calendar year. Example: a specific person being prayed for by multiple different family members living in different households or friends.
• Mass Intentions cannot be scheduled for Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, or Christmas. These Mass intentions will be for the general intentions of our priests and parishioners.
• We generally publish the Mass intention in the parish bulletin and announce it at each Mass.
  • Lengthy listings may be edited in the bulletin for the sake of brevity. Since the purpose of publishing the intention is to notify family and friends, we suggest the omission of middle initials, titles, etc.
  • The priest is under the strict obligation to remember the person for whom the Mass is being offered, and we presume that the priest will offer the Mass as requested. Since it is a spiritual act, if a verbal announcement is not made at Mass, it neither adds to, nor negates its validity.
• Anyone may request a Mass Intention for:
  • those who are living or deceased
  • a Catholic or non-Catholic
  • a particular person or couple: Susie Smith, Joe & Alice Black
  • a particular family or generational families: John Smith Family, Smith & Black Families
  • a special intention appropriate to the celebration of the Eucharist e.g.: World Peace, Vocations, Respect for Life, the poor souls in purgatory, etc. These intentions should be general and not specific to an individual.
